U.N. investigators questioned five senior pro-Syrian figures on Tuesday as suspects in the February killing of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

Lebanese police and U.N. investigators detained three former security chiefs in dawn raids, the first time they have implicated allies of Syria in the killing that shook Lebanon and hastened the departure of Syrian troops after three decades.

A fourth man named as a suspect, Republican Guard commander Brigadier General Mustafa Hamdan, went to the headquarters of the United Nations investigating team himself.

The fifth suspect, former member of parliament Nassir Qandil, returned from Syria to face the investigators, brought in by the Security Council after a U.N. fact-finding mission found Lebanon incapable of carrying out a credible inquiry.

"The U.N. investigators searched the homes of the former security chiefs and the head of the Republican Guard before bringing them in as suspects for questioning...," the U.N. said in a statement.

One is left to wonder if these arrests are truly in the right direction or simply a stunt to appease an increasingly dissatisfied populus with the performance of Seniora's cabinet.
It remains to be seen whether these Generals will be officially charged with the assassination, with delinquent security measures or released.
The real question remains who planned the whole thing and for what purpose?
