Saad Hariri had a golden opportunity in the wake of his father's assassination and the end of Syria's thirty-year occupation of Lebanon to unite the Lebanese people around a national comprehensive political agenda that excluded no one. He did not. Instead he and the "future" team decided they would rather work within a close-knit circle of friends, dad's allies and a few politicians and leaders here and there who submit to the mighty buck wherever it comes from. For 15 years, since the Taef accord, Lebanon's Christian community has suffered neglect, marginalization and suppression. After the end of Syria's occupation, Hariri had an opportunity to demonstrate to the Christians of Lebanon that he believed in ther essential role as a pillar-community of Lebanon; instead, he decided to marginalize this community, allied homself with Nabih Berri of Amal and Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah and they all agreed on going together to the elections under an electrol law mandated by Ghazi Kanaan. After the elections, the Lebanese Christians in the mainly Christian sectors of Lebanon spoke and gave their votes almost unanimously to the General Michel Aoun and his allies. What does Hariri decide to do? Boycott the General, attack him daily in every news outlet that he owns or can influence and marginalize, even worse, ignore the Christian vote altogether. Today, after almost 1 year on the elections and the appointment of a pro-Hariri cabinet, we look back on what the Hariri team has achieved and the answer is nothing: they suspended the state's activities and put people's lives on hold, awaiting the results of an international investigation. If you call them on it, they blame it on Lahoud. Well, Mr. Hariri, do not miss another opportunity to show the "non-Blue" Lebanese, largely the Christians and Shiites of Lebanon some good faith. Put your hands in the hands of General Michel Aoun, and work with him on changing the President and let's us resolve this stalemate. This is if you believe that the interest of the Lebanese people requires that Lahoud be gone. Otherwise, put your hands in those of Lahoud and work together to serve this poor people until the end of his term. The time is upon you Saad Al-Hariri and it is now: PUT UP or SHUT UP. |

Amen Truth. Finally someone who speaks the truth in this forum. The irony in all of this is that Hariri's future TV and newspaper attacks Aoun day and night and whenever Aoun replies to one of their attacks, lunatic Jumblat points it out as unacceptable. I think Hariri-Jumblat and the newly-politicized (Pierre Gemayel) are taking this country into a civil war. It is their way or the highway. they adopted Bush's slogans: you are with us or against us; so in Lebanon if you do not follow Hariri, you are against him and therefore against Jumblat, agianst Pierre Gemayyel and against Lebanon. I say it is time to get rid of all of these thugs and get us a clean slate of leaders uncorruptable by money and power. AND YES WE NEED MICHEL AOUN IN BAABDA. |

I don't understand the purpose of this topic. What opportunities did Saad miss? He is doing everything he could to accomodate the Christian concerns and the Shiite concerns and everybody's needs. Let us not forget that he and his allies in Lebanon have been under attack for the last year by the Syrians and their agents in Lebanon from Baabda to biyya3 el-ka3k. How do you govern a country that is more like a bordelo than a country. He tried with Hezbollah, it did not work out what shall he do? Join the Hezb? He tried with Amal, things seem to be going OK until now. I agree he should have tried harder with Michel Aoun. Frankly, I do not understand why the Future movement is vetoing Aoun's presidency. My guess it is not Hariri, it is mostly Jumblat/Hamadé. They put the veto early on and they are dragging Saad and the future with them. Maybe next month they will change positions. |
