In a historic maneuver, Syrian agent Nabih Berri defeated the Maronite leadership and its allies in the opposition.
As usual, the Maronite leader Nasrallah Sfeir handed a victory to the enemies of democracy in Lebanon. He did it once before, when the Taif accord was signed; he did it again, when the 2000 Electoral Law was passed for 2005.
Sfeir held a meeting of the Maronite political bureau, otherwise known as the council of the archbishops, and demanded in the name of the "Maronite Party" in Lebanon that the electoral law for 2005 be based on the Caza.
The Syrian agent, Nabih Berri, in charge of Parliament for more than 12 years now, managed in collaboration with Emile Lahoud, the head of the Syrian security regime in Lebanon, to pass the electoral law of 2000, through a number of slick and sneaky maneuvers, defeating thereby the calls of the Maronite Party and its allies in the opposition for a Caza-based law.
When will this man, Sfeir, learn that his involvement in politics will only bring disgrace and defeat to his stature and that of his party? The Maronites were defeated once again collectively by the foolish and unnecessary political behavior of their leader; and Syria won again.

I totally agree.
We are the victim of a policy of a narrow minded man :(
He should have accepted the law of "mohafaza with proportions", at least yel7a2 el kezeb la beb el dar and see if the other side is serious about it. The "mohafaza with proportions" is adopted by many democratic countries and it represents all the political parties.
I feel furious to see this man so ....(prefer not to say it)!!!!!
40% of beirut voters are christians. In the law 2000 they won't get aby parliament seat. However if the law was "Mohafaza with proportions" they can get (if they were united) up to 8 seats.

unfortunately this is true. the christian political leadership in lebanon, more specifically the maronite one, who has always claimed to speak for the christians, has been devastated after the wars between geaja and aoun in the late 80s. instead of encouraging more civil leaders to come forward and promote a youthful forward-looking agenda through its many educated children, Bkerki and what Pax calls the maronite party have decided that Sfeir should assume the political mantle and to his credit Sfeir was received by bush for a photo-op without substance. but he certainly lost this round against the syrian security regime represented by Berri and Lahoud; they played him like a puppet.

Yes indeed. This is a major setback for Bkerki particularly that the patriarch has been all up in arms about the Caza distrincting.
This is what comes from what he described to GW Bush as a democracy by agreement. He got screwed so will be a large number of Lebanese christians. He should have opted for a true pluralistic democracy, at least the christians will get a fairer representation than now. Under the 2000 law, christians get to elect 12-15% ONLY of the seats in parliament when they represent 44-48% of the population.

The elections should go as planned. Only after the results are out, one can tell who was defeated and who won.
It is premature to speculate now. Such comments help only inflame negative emotions and add oil to fire.
