Our political system is based on distribution of power among religious groups. This old fashion system have caused us many unrest in the past including the civil war. If we want to build a country for the future, where all citizens are equal in rights and duties, we should opt for a new modern and pure civil system. Where only the rule of law governs and not the influence of a religious community.
To achieve this goal, it is essential to lift up all the barriers separating the lebanese people, one of them religious segregation, and promote a complete merge and fusion among the different lebanese groups.

This is true we have to separate the religion from the state!
Any capable lebanese should be able to become president or prime minister etc...
Civil marriage will allow the lebanese people to merge into each other...

I am not sure if everyone agrees with you guys. the religious establishment in lebanon will not let go of its powers and they can vary easily brainwash the people following them.
look at the politicians flocking to bkerke and dar el fatwa.
even junblatt whenever he wants to show his support for someone, he calls on masheyekh el akl to demonstrate.

For sure this is not going to happen overnight, however there is a chance today to begin walking towards this target. Probably a good start is an optional Civil Marriage just like LebMan suggested.
I believe that civil marriage will help ease the tension between religious communities, for example a "christian" child won't look muslims as different "species" if his uncle (mother side) is a "muslim"... By giving this option to the lebanese people, I am sure next generations will be less fanatic and more tolerant.
What benefit do I get if I have a corrupted christian president or muslim prime minister !!! Personally I don't mind having a good muslim president and a good christian prime minister (this is just an example)....

I am all for a civil society. I am Lebanese of one of the major sects without telling you wich one. I am seeing one not from my sect and (not from my religion) from here, we may get to a point of marriage one day. Does Lebanon recognize that?

The secularisation of lebanon should be done through reforming the whole mentality of the lebanese people; and not with a flick of a switch.

I think you are saying one thing and its opposite at the same time: Lebanese people and "mental" activity or mentality do not go hand in hand. They know how to applaud for a leader, cheer loudly when happy and weep profusely with sorrow. But they are unable to think independently. I am beginning to believe they should be stripped of the right to self-govern until they mature. In the interim, let a foreign mandate (not from the Arab or regressive worlds) come and govern (preferably from the Swiss if they accept).

There is some truth in what Samir said, however I suppose that the context this time is different. Lebanon is now free, and there is no reason for any lebanese citizen not to elect whom he sees appropriate.
I know that the election law is still far from ideal, however if the lebanese people is not aware enough to look at the past 15 years and get the right conclusions, we are in a serious trouble. We should prove that we are now a mature people.
Personaly I give it more than 50% chance that we are gonna make it :)

I totally agree with Zys. Separation of Religion and State is a necessity to make progress in any reform plan in Lebanon. If the various religious groups are willing to let go of their hold on the political power and allow a civil society to come into existence in Lebanon, the task will be easy.
Otherwise, it will take a massive education campaign over more than one generation to cleanse the Lebanese mentality of the religious residues when it comes to political decisions. Perhaps then and through a public referendum, we can hope to see a truly secular society of faithful, believers and non-believers living in harmony and total civility.

Truth be said, politics in Lebanon is a dirty business.
Each political party is centered around sect or a religious leader, even after Taif:
Hizbollah: shi3a
Amal: shi3a
al-mustaqbal current: sunny
PSP: druze

Before Taif, you had the christian parties, like Kataeb, Ahrar, ect. mostly maronites, today they all come under the umbrella of what Paxlibano calls the big maronite party.

how can you achieve a true civil society when everyone's first affiliation is with his sect?

even the newly formed parties, take sectarian names: "Alliqua' eshshi3i"

How about we begin with something very simple:
common playgrounds all over Lebanon where children of all faiths can come and play together with national contests and prizes. let Jean play with Ali and Fatmeh, and Mahmoud with Georges and Antoinette, then send them together to non-segregated schools, summer programs, universities, and gradually Jean will fall in love with Fatmeh and Ali with Antoinette and a new generation of Ali-Jean and Marie-Fatmeh, hybrid Lebanese, will be born. This will be our surety for a lasting peace.

Not a bad idea :)
I stringly support civil marriage. I even with giving benefits from the states to mixed couples for example if 2 persons have the same skills the one whose spouse is of another religion should take precedence in employment in the state. Taxes should be lower on mixed couples. etc...
