Several people have been injured in an explosion on a street in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The director-general of internal security, General Ashraf Rifi, told Lebanese television that a bomb had been placed under a car near Rue Monot. The street, filled with restaurants and nightclubs, has a bustling nightlife. The explosion came hours after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left the city after a brief, unannounced visit. Earlier reports had suggested one person had been killed and up to seven people had been wounded.
It is not known yet who may be behind the attack, but early reports point to Syrian agents working through Hezbollah's security system.
It is very plausible that hizballah or al-jama3a al-islamiyya may be behind the attack on Monot Street. After all Monot street and places like it would be the first target on the list of their "moral police" lilamr bilma3rouf wannahyi 3anilmounkar. I did not hear Hizballah decry the attack on Monot when they did decry the one on Sharam eshsheikh!!! or were they sending messages to the US in both instances: in beirut to tell Condy that she can't come to Lebanon and attack Hizballah without repercussions and in Egypt to gain US sympathy by showing the world that Hizballah opposes terrorism. Inconsistent!!!
