His excellency Prime Minister Fouad Seniora has just completed a visit to the USA. His visit was hailed by Al-Mustaqbal block in Parliement as a "great success", but received severe criticism from Speaker Berri and Hezbollah's Nasrallah.
We would like to know how do you feel in general about Mr. Seniora's visit, more specifically:
1) Do you feel that Mr. Seniora was within his constitutionally mandated role? 2) Did Mr. Seniora sideline other keyplayers in Lebanon? 3) Was Mr. Seniora's silence vis-a-vis Dr. Rice's comment on violent groups in the Lebanese government appropriate? 4) Were Mr. Seniora's comments on the President of the Lebanese Republic and who and what he represents appropriate, particularly that they were made outside Lebanon and before a foreign audience and the foreign press? |

I felt he wanted to show off. I did not understand why a Prime Minister would meet with ministers of foreign affairs of other countries; why not send the minister of foreign affairs (Salloukh)? It seemed as if Seniora wanted to steel the show from Lahoud, not more. To answer your questions: 1) Yes 2) Yes 3) Yes 4) No |

I am not sure if it was for show off or if something good will come out of it. The overall assessment will have to wait the results and I have not seen any positive results yet. As for his individual behavior, I thought it was totally inappropriate: first, calling for the resignation of the President of the Republic (regardless of who that one is and regardless of how you feel about him) while visiting a foreign country, is totally unpatriotic. second, holding meetings with ministers affairs of foreign countries without the Lebanese foreign affairs minister being directly involved is very scary: an indication of totalitarian tendencies. third, standing silent as the Mrs. Rice accuses the Lebanese government of harboring elements who advocate violence is highly incompetent. At least he should have replied by politely thanking her and clarifying that there are no-violence advocates in the current Lebanese government but rather all members are peace-loving and freedom-advocates (unless he considers himself otherwise). |

Seniora and his cabinet must resign. They are the most incompetent flock that has ever served in government: They hold the worst record on everything (security, economy, defense and internal policy) and it is time for them to go home. |

I think Seniora has yet to show he is capable of governing. I would not call for his resignation yet but I think Hassan Sabeh must go; he is totally useless. |

We have to wait and see the results. I am not sure what was the point of that visit and its timing yet. If Seniora's says we do not have security systems in place for they were all disbanded by Syria, do we have an economic system in place? Do we know how many Lebanese are employed and how many are unemployed? Do we know how many Lebanese are working, studying, living abroad? Do we know how many foreign workers are curretly working in Lebanon? Do we have a proper tax system that takes foreign workers and Lebanese working abroad into consideration? Do we have any stats on these figures? Or are we simply hoping for a quick fix from the foreign powers that pours some money into the pockets of Hariri and his cronies? |
